BMRG (Professor Ramani Narayan's research group) is in the Department of Chemical Engineering & Materials Science at Michigan State University. The group members are graduate and undergraduate students, postdoctoral fellows, & industrial researchers. Our R&D involves "Design & Engineering of Biobased and Biodegradable-Compostable Plastics". We are active in developing end-of-life solutions for biodegradable organic wastes (food, paper, and associated packaging wastes) using "bioreactors" that can be located onsite. This approach complements "industrial composting" of food, paper, and associated packaging (certified compostable) wastes. U.S. EPA model teach that diverting 1 million metric tons of biodegradable organic wastes in MSW from landfills to industrial composting results in 0.95 million metric tons of CO2-equivalents GHG emissions reduction.
