The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy offered a Drinking Water Treatment Series to drinking water operators and personnel associated with F-Class drinking water treatment plants in the State of Michigan.
Registration Fee: $80 includes all 8 sessions.
Continuing Education: Each session provides CECs for a total of up to 1.7 CECs for attending the entire course series.
Session 1 - Basic Math, Rules and Regulations, and Source Water

This session will cover Basic Math, Rules and Regulations and source water. Basic math will cover exponents, areas, volumes, unit conversions, concentrations, logarithms, graphing, flow rates, and example problems. Rules and regulations will cover surface water treatment rules, log removal, interim enhanced surface water treatment rule, filter backwash recycling rule, long term enhanced surface water treatment rules, crypto outbreaks, and bin classifications. Source water will cover ground water, great lakes, inland lakes or impoundments, and rivers.

Session 2 - Coagulation, Mixing, Flocculation, and Sedimentation

This session will cover concepts of coagulation, mixing, flocculation, and sedimentation. Coagulation will cover related regulations, chemical reactions, physical properties, and monitoring performances. Mixing will cover rapid mixing designs, and mixing characteristics. Flocculation will cover conventional treatment, direct filtration, basin designs, solid contact clarifiers and stages. Sedimentation will cover basic concept, conventional basins, optimization, and sludge removal.

Session 3 - Coagulation Dosage Calculations, Disinfection, Fluoridation

This session will cover alum calculations, disinfection/chlorination, and fluoridation. Disinfection and chlorination will cover properties of chlorine, chlorine reactions, breakpoint chlorination, chlorine residuals, chlorine by-products, and example problems. Fluoridation will cover public health issues, forms of fluoride used for water treatment, storage and handling, common feeders, and design, how to calculate application levels, residual testing, and reporting requirements.
Session 7 - Operator Duties and Ethics, Water Storage, and Pumping Systems

This session will cover operator water storage, responsibilities and expectations of an operator, and pumping systems. Water storage will include storage design, Storage for contact time maintenance and preventing contamination.

Session 8 - Corrosion Control
